What’s inside the guide?
- Exhale longer than you inhale: in for four, out for six, and why it signals rest
- Put your feet on something real: a full minute of contact with the ground
- Name the bracing: the words that calm the alarm, a tool researchers call affect labeling
- The short science behind each practice, on one page you can screenshot
- A closing reminder to keep close: “You're allowed to feel good. First let your body believe it's allowed to rest.”
A look inside
Practice one, word for word. It's the one I'd start with today:
“Breathe in for a count of four, out for a slow count of six. Let the out-breath be the long one. A few rounds is enough.”
Why does it matter?
A longer exhale is one of the best-studied calming tools there is. In a 2023 Stanford study, five minutes a day of breathing built around long exhales, practiced for one month, improved mood more than the same five minutes of mindfulness meditation and slowed breathing more. Safety first. Happiness after.
Who is it for?
Women who feel wired, braced or anxious and want to settle before they strengthen. Save it to your phone for the tight mornings, and come back to it whenever your shoulders creep up.
From Kim Fisher, strength trainer since 1982 and bestselling author of Morning Mantras That Will Change Your Life.
“I’ve been dealing with anxiety, and this guide gave me permission to pause and settle. That gentle reminder to take a moment for myself meant a lot.”

Who is Calm Comes First for?
Women who feel tense, wired or on edge and want a few gentle tools for the hard moments. It's a wellness practice, not a treatment, so talk with your doctor if anxiety is getting in the way of your life.
How long do the three practices take?
A few rounds of the longer exhale, one full minute with your feet on the ground, and one plain sentence to name the bracing. Most mornings, all three fit in a few minutes.
