A look inside

One sample snack, number three of the ten:

“From a sturdy chair, stand and sit with control, as many as you can in 2 to 3 minutes. This builds the exact leg strength that keeps you independent, and it gets the heart rate up. No equipment, no floor work.”
From the guide · Sit-to-Stand Repeats

Why does it matter?

Short bursts count. In a 2022 study of 25,241 adults who didn't exercise, wearing activity trackers, three bursts of vigorous everyday movement a day, each one to two minutes, were linked with a 38 to 40% lower risk of dying from any cause or from cancer. It's an observational study, so it shows a link, not proof, and it's the research behind every snack in the guide.

Who are exercise snacks for?

Women short on time who want short bursts that count, alongside their walking and strength training. If you have heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes or another health condition, talk with your doctor before adding vigorous effort.

How do I know a snack is vigorous enough?

Use the talk test from the guide. Vigorous means you can speak only a few words at a time, about a 6 to 8 on a scale of 1 to 10. Vigorous is relative to your body, so a brisk hill counts as much as a jog.
