A Holiday Mindset Reset
Three science reminders, three gentle practices, and a little more grace for this week.
It's December 22nd, which means the calendar is loud right now. Parties, errands, family dynamics, old memories, new emotions, the pressure to make everything feel "special."
If you're feeling tender, you're not doing it wrong. The holidays can be beautiful and complicated at the same time.
Three science reminders about thoughts and your body
1. Your thoughts can trigger a real stress response. When your brain interprets something as pressure or threat, your body responds with hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. That can affect appetite, cravings, sleep, inflammation, and how resilient you feel. Your inner dialogue matters, because your nervous system is listening.
2. Your brain is trainable, even in midlife. Neuroplasticity means you can build new patterns. With consistent practice, things like mindfulness and attention training are associated with measurable changes in the brain. You can become steadier, not by forcing it, yet by practicing it.
3. Expectation changes outcomes. The placebo effect is real, not imaginary. Belief and expectation can influence how you experience symptoms like pain and stress, and how your body responds. Your mind and body are always in conversation.
Three simple practices for the holidays
1. Interrupt the spiral with one small action. When you notice yourself overthinking or emotionally flooding, pick one tiny, physical move. Drink water. Step outside for two minutes. Put your hand on your chest and take five slow breaths. Action tells the brain, "I'm safe enough to move forward."
2. Choose one anchor habit, not ten new rules. This is not the week for perfection. Choose one thing that keeps you feeling like you. A short walk after meals. Protein at breakfast. A stretch before bed. A phone-free morning. Small is powerful because small is repeatable.
3. Protect your peace without making it a war. You're allowed to step away. You're allowed to say no. You're allowed to keep your energy. Boundaries are not punishment, they're how you stay kind without abandoning yourself.
Let this season be less about performing and more about being present.
I believe in you and in your ability to build a better life. You are not behind. I've got you.
